If you know what this word means, you are very smart...but if you say it outloud, you sound very dumb

My friend Charlie from back in DC, sent me the dictionary.com word of the day:

Gimcrack [Jim-crak]
1. A showy but useless or worthless object; a gewgaw
i.e. I am not too impressed by all of your gimcrack in your house.

I love how they give us a definition and then give us a word that is supposed to help us understand what the word is--a gewgaw? A gewgaw? I am supposed to know what that word means...how is that supposed to help me? Yep, count me among those that have never heard of either word.

Seriously though, how awesome are both of those words? If you want to impress all of your friends, drop a few gewgaws and gimcracks in the conversation and use these words interchangeably. It will blow their minds.

I am sure Brodi knows that word and has used it correctly in several conversations.

Actually, when faced with the choice, I prefer the word "gewgaw". Take that, Amy! As for the word "gimcrack", all I can picture is a kid in gym class whose pants are sitting a little low. Hmmm...
