Fireworks, Danger, Internet Reunion, etc.

Sorry for the delay in between posts. A couple of random things:

Should I be concerned that Beckham was walking around our house with one of this hand held grill lighters? Should I be even more concerned that we had a huge bag of fireworks in the toy box in our family room? Yeah, I agree...I shouldn't be concerned at all.

Our internet best friend from Georgia came out and hung out with us on Tuesday night. If you haven't visited her site before, check it out, she has great stuff: ShellBell We had a good time hanging out and partying all night long. I think it is fair to say that she had a memorable night as she was finally introduced to Tab. As we all know, few things in life are better than Tab...she got to taste the goodness and if I remember our conversation correctly, she said something like: 'Thank you Sam for introducing me to Tab. This could be the turning point in my life.' Something like that. Glad to have you in town Shellie.

We had our annual Saturn Avenue raging 4th of July party a few days ago. Basically a bunch of families on our street and neighboring streets come on over to grill up some meat (I do have to say that my huge Ribeye steak dwarfed all of their puny hotdogs), cook up some s'mores at the firepit and set off fireworks. And when you get 8 families all bringing fireworks, well, you spend a lot of time hoping and praying that nobody will accidentally light one of the kids on fire. Thanks to the Jefferies, Tanners, Jankes, Deans, Pettys, Davies, Littles and Nielsons for the good times. We all survived. Can't wait for next year...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to CARTER--5 years old

Today is Carter's birthday. It is crazy to think that he is already 5 years old. I think of everything has changed for us over the past 5 years since he was born:
  • Lived in Washinton DC, Denver and Salt Lake City
  • Lived in 3 different apartments and 2 different homes
  • Sam has had 2 different jobs
  • Brodi has had 2 different jobs
  • He now has a little brother

We love our 'good little boy' Carter. For a kid that never talked until he was 3-years old, we can't get him to stop talking now. He loves running around, he loves role playing, he loves his imaginary friends and he loves bossing his little brother around. He is fearless. Whenever we go to Disneyland, he rides every single ride. That includes Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain, Indiana Jones and Soarin' over California. He has wanted to ride the horses from, it seems, since he was born and he happily jumps on the horse and wants to ride away. I can count on one hand the number of times that he has actually seemed nervous--he seems to take each situation, no matter how stressful or out of his element he is, in stride.

He has had his own share of mis-haps and accidents. He plummeted on top of a coffee table and got 3 stitches right over his eye...he had a chainlink gate smash him in the face opening up another gash which required 3 stitches over his eye...he was playing around with cousins and landed on the ground wrong and broke his collarbone...he pulled down a small cabinet at church and ended up with cuts and bruises all over his face...he had a door shut on his finger which nearly cut it entirely off but we were able to save it and it took 11 stitches to put it back together...he had a heat induced seizure at Disneyworld and had to spend the better part of a night at a hospital in Celebration, Florida. He knows what pain is and he has dealt with it like a superstar.

He loves trains and trucks. He loves going to big open areas like the UofU for football or basketball events. He loves Scooby Doo, Duck Dodgers and Harry Potter. He does not like it when his mommy or daddy sing to him either. He loves running (he loves to run around the Olympus High School track and he will go around it a couple of times before he even begins to get tired). He loves computer games and he loves scary books (like Where the Wild Things are and the Blue Monster).

We had a fun party with Brodi's family as well as our friends the Jefferies. They all came over to our house and Carter was spoiled and got great gifts and had fun hantoo good of stuff. It was then off to my family where he was spoiled again with gifts and cake. He had the time of his life today. Happy Birthday to our Big Boy.

Lava Hot Springs camping trip

We got together with a bunch of friends and headed on up to Lava Hot Springs. Now as many of you know, this would take a lot of courage for us to venture back up to Idaho. See, we lived up in Blackfoot (about 45 minutes away from Lava) and for the past 8 years, we have done our best to stay away from the town of Blackfoot due to some not-so-stellar memories. But, we put aside our fear and still went up.

Lava Hot Springs is trying to make itself more of a resort like town. They have a river running thru it where people can do some rafting, they have hot springs throughout the town and they have some hiking you can do. Our group signed up at one of the camp grounds and as you can see, it was beautiful! Cars as far as the eye can see and campsites that gave you a nice comfortable 8 inches in between tents. I am just happy that our friends still want to hang out with us after spending the weekend with us.

We all had a good time. We spent the evening hanging out and letting the kids run around. But then darkness fell and let me tell you--Beckham was not too thrilled with the idea of sleeping in his crib, in the tent. Carter happily headed to the tent, got in his sleeping bag and promptly fell asleep. Beckham did not. He voiced his displeasure for a while but it became so loud that it was disturbing the neighboring campsites. I took him in the car and tried to reason with my 1.5 year old and he was not impressed with this tactic. We hung out in the car for a while and then back to the tent. He was still not happy. So, back to the car. Are you seeing the trend here? At about 2am, he finally dozed off and I gently picked him up and put him in his crib in the tent and he slept until 6am. At least we made it thru the night even though I think that I got less sleep than he did. Beckham had a great time during the rest of the trip, but the sleeping part was an obstacle.

We then spent the next morning with a fabulous breakfast of eggs, grapes, bacon and fun. We decided to venture out and head up to the hot springs. Let me just say--these springs are hot. I know that I am a wimp, but we could not even get into half of the pools because it was so smokin' hot. But we finally did get in one and had a good time just hanging out. I also learned that there are many people that are not scared to show off their bodies even when their bodies have no need to be shown off. My speedo fit in real well here. We did a little more hanging out but had to head off back to SLC for some work and fun. It was a good trip and we had a lot of fun even with just a few hours of sleep.
